Re: [GrizHFMinimill] Yahoo Groups: Important changes

There are no plans to move the group to another host.

Better make some.  If this group doesn't move to another host, it will die.  Not immediately, but soon.  Yahoo was bought by Verizon, which is not interested in Groups because they're a telecommunication company and they don't make money from people chatting with one another in email.

So they've been gradually shutting things off.  First they fired all the techs who ran Yahoo Groups, so you can't get help if something unusual happens (like the group owner dies or disappears.  You used to be able to transfer a group to a new owner, but now the people who knew how to do that aren't working there anymore).

Now, they're shutting down files and photos, which use a lot of bandwidth.  That's what's happening in December.  And sometime after that, they'll announce a date when emails will stop, and that will be the final end of Yahoo Groups.

This gradual worsening of the service is on purpose -- so groups that care about what they're doing will go elsewhere, and have enough notice so they can. If this group is one of the groups that care about what they're doing , groups.io will transfer everything over seamlessly and charge a small annual fee.  If the group owner here doesn't think this group is worth preserving, it will die when Verizon finally pulls the plug.  There's hardly any traffic here anyway, but I have found useful things in the files, so I hope the group will be saved.

As of October 28th, Yahoo groups will make changes:

For their complete official announcement, please go to yahoogroups.com.

The announcement, in part, says:

Yahoo has made the decision to no longer allow users to upload content to the Yahoo Groups site. Beginning October 28 you won't be able to upload any more content to the site, and as of December 14 all previously posted content on the site will be permanently removed. You'll have until that date to save anything you've uploaded.

Following are two quotes:

FIrst:

Photos and files can be saved right from the Yahoo Groups site, or you can download your data from the Privacy Dashboard.

Second:

removed features:

  • Files
  • Polls
  • Links
  • Photos
  • Folders
  • Calendar
  • Database
  • Attachments
  • Conversations
  • Email Updates
  • Message Digest
  • Message History
I would personally suggest that you download anything you think would be of interest before the end dates.

There are no plans to move the group to another host.
