I have a large group on Groups.io. We transferred from Yahoo a couple of
years ago. Here is the current situation with group transfers...
The cost for group transfer is $220, which includes 1-year Premium group
status with 10 GB storage. After a year the group can downgrade to Basic
with 1 GB maximum storage capacity (files and photos).
Currently, Basic groups are free but there is no guarantee that they
will remain so. Groups.io has no ad revenue; they make money by selling
a service directly to customers, not by subjecting them to
advertisements or mining their data. (As someone once said: if you think
the product is free, you are probably the product.)
The transfer process is pretty painless but does require involvement by
the current group owner to "invite" Groups.io to the Yahoo group and
give them moderator status so they can carry out the actual transfer of
data, including the message base, files & photos. This is of course
dependent on Yahoo's current functionality-- the ability to invite a new
member and access files & photos-- which may be crumbling.
The "safe" transfer deadline is Dec. 1st, but it would probably be best
to undertake it sooner rather than later.
