[GrizHFMinimill] Re: Got it! Thank you all. Is a Quick change Collet worth it?

Just another data point. I love my ER32 collet set. I can swap stuff out quickly. I can chuck up drill bits and use a lot less space than with a drill chuck. I don't have to tighten that much. Tools come out of it easily. I use the same collet set on my lathe. They just hold so well. I generally don't even put the spanner on mine in the lathe. I just chuck it up hand tight. The only time I have had it slip is when I was tapping. The collet holder for my lathe came with a tommy bar for closing it but was not drilled anywhere for it. It has not been important enough for me to even think about drilling it. If I do need a bit more head room on the mill, I can use the R8 collets that came with the tooling set I got but so far, they have just been taking up space in my tool box.

I got mine for my lathe at LMS. It was pricey because I got the one that bolts to the faceplate so I can put things through the spindle. The R8 one I got for my mill came from Hong Kong through ebay and it was $28 with free shipping. online-seller68 was the vendor. CTC Tools also has a good selection of stuff. MicroMark's ER25 set for $65 with holder and collets is a good deal but I enjoy having the 3/4 in of the ER32.

Next heat the bottom of the spindle with the hot air gun until it heats up, then after it is warm (not real hot maybe 150 degree F) hold the dry ice against the holder farthest away from the spindle. After about a minute or two then try giving it a few whacks.

Chances are you will mess up something, but as long as it is not the spindle the rest is easily replaced albeit costly.
