Pretty much how I did mine. I did use a small square and eye balled it just to make sure my drill and my tap were fairly straight.

I punched, center drilled and then drilled and tapped 3/48 screws by hand. Not worth going to a lot of extra work so a drill press can be used. Your just mounting the scale, no real accuracy is involved.mike

Subject: [GrizHFMinimill] Advice on Drilling Column
I know this is pretty trivial, but I need to drill and tap some holes in the column of my LMS mill to mount a DRO scale and some other bits and pieces. I'm looking for advice from those of you who've gone boldly before: Am I better off disassembling things so I can use a drill press, or would it work just as well to leave everything assembled and simply use a hand drill with the inherent reduction in accuracy? What approach did you use?
