Re: [GrizHFMinimill] Basic Anodizing Question

Lee,

My own experience is very limited limited to anodizing a couple parts at
home. The composition of your alloy is an important factor to answering
your questions. Depending on the alloy (some alloys do not anodize well
- if at all) the preparation typically begins with scrupulous
degreasing/cleaning, rinsing, etching & desmut (depending on the alloy),
then time in the anodize bath, another rinse, dye or leave clear,
followed by sealing. Some also buff their parts afterwards.

You'll want to have the surface finished *at least* as well as you want
the anodize to be. Flaws will stand out more after anodizing. There
can be some small dimensional changes from the process, but they might
be important if your tolerances are really tight. Really sharp corners
do not anodize well - but you don't need a wide chamfer either.

There are some VERY knowledgeable, and helpful, guys on the anodizing101
yahoo group. They're pretty sharp about the technical issues. Hope it
helps.

Bill
