Re: [GrizHFMinimill] chuck falls out

Remove the morse taper or R8 holder by inserting a draw bar thru the spindle and screwed into the holder.Back the draw bar off about 1/4" at most.Lock the head and smack the draw bar with a dead blow hammer. The holder will come loose but not fall out .Remove the draw bar.The holder will pull down now. Clean the holder and the female part of the chuck, look for any burrs.Open the chuck jaws completely, place on a wooden scrap.Place the holder in the chuck ,one good smack with a mallet or dead blow hammer should do the trick.Make sure the chucks jaws are completely open or you will damage the chuck.
Often ,especially with a drill press you just press the chuck on after cleaning the tapers. The above method takes a minute longer and usually is pretty failsafe.
Although one time I had to use Loctite on the taper of a brand new bench type drill press for a neighbor.

Subject: [GrizHFMinimill] chuck falls out

I am new to the machine tool thing in general. So I don't yet know all the terms and tool names.

I bought a used mill. It has a taper chuck to the Drive shaft.

On my first attempt to use it the chuck falls off the taper.

What is the procedure for putting it on and having it stay?
