For all of the reasons that Rob listed, were pretty much spot on. I wouldn't advise buying small to see if it will work for you, and then going up from there. The Mini Mill for my uses I find fairly acceptable. Most of its shortcomings can be addressed pretty easily. For me, I installed a set of DRO scales, belt drive, and air spring.
I like the R8 tooling its usually priced reasonably, and easy to find and also will fit a larger machine if you go that way one day.. The one thing that I think would be helpful is a larger table which wasn't an option when I bought my mill. Using even small fixtures takes up more real estate than you'd believe.
If I were to do it again, at this time, I'd go with the LMS machine with the Hi Torque motor and larger table, or go to an X3.
