RE: [GrizHFMinimill] Re: Help! My end mill is stuck in my machine!

Lee,

with a "self-holding" taper such as the MT series it is important not to overtighten to avoid undue hitting  on the slackened drawbar to release the taper and prevent the possibility of damage to the bearings in particular. a 1/4 to 1/2 turn with a spanner after nipping up has always proved more than adequate to avoid any risk of slipping in my experience. Many newbies seem to have problems with overtightening of MT tapers until they learn to trust their gripping capabilities.

When you say your draw bar is slipping do you think you may have stripped the threads - if so it is possible you may get away with re-tapping the holder or replacing it once you get it removed.

I would suggest that you follow the advice given and support the spindle by dropping the head so that the perimeter of the spindle is supported on the table (leaving a little room for the holder to "pop" free) before you resume hammering, preferably using a largish brass drift (dont use anything hard as this will damage the spindle), The support to the spindle will transfer the shock better and should prevent damage to the bearings, Sharp taps with a (brass) hammer on the drift should do the trick.

If fairly heavy hammering does not do the trick you might like to consider soaking with penetrating oil and/or heating the bottom of the spindle with a hair dryer (dont overdo the heating) to expand and/or loosen it slightly before trying again with the draft.

I hope this will help. If it does and you used penetrating oil be sure to remove any traces of it before continuing to use holders and tapers.

I used the wrong terminology in my post. My holder is stuck not the endmill. I have a morse taper 3. I hate to say it I have taken some serious wacks at it already. Once agian Help!

Chances are you will mess up something, but as long as it is not the spindle the rest is easily replaced albeit costly.
