[GrizHFMinimill] Re: Strange mill problem

I would guess if the mill is new, or new to you, and it's always done this, the key or upper straight part of the spindle bore could be suspect. If you had no problem before, and it suddenly occured, then possibly a small bit of swarf is stuck inside the bore, either in the tapered or straight part making the collets skew to one side. I've never run into this issue yet on my X2, but I do occaisionally run a round brass brush up in the spindle, immediately followed by holding the shop vac nozzle at the bore opening to remove anything the brush might have disloged, but didn't fall out. Just a thought. Hopefully it's something that simple.

If I measure inside the spindle I get less than .001 runout (~.0007). If I mount a collet and a tool in the spindle and tighten down the drawbar and measure runout on the tool surface it is .007 or .008. This happens with all my collets and mills and drill chucks and bits, so it is something to do with the mill spindle. It's as if the collets are askew in the spindle, not parallel to the axis of the spindle.
