Never has been a problem with chips. I have covers on both X &Y. And Y is completely covered but chips still get in there sometime but never have caused a problem with the readout.

Interesting photos, Charles. Have you ever seen chips mess up the scales? I am making some covers for mine, and was wondering how careful I need to be to seal them up.
