I did a similar thing using a plane angle plate ( 4 x 6 ) with no slots. I also machined a channel to mate with the column.

James; That is an excellent idea. A long time ago I replaced the
flimsy washer with a piece of 5/8" (16mm?) square steel relieved on the
column side so all the force is applied to the side of the column.
