I've "tried". My first vise had no slots on the short sides and I wanted to mount it longitudinally... I used my vife's diamond drill bit she uses for drilling agates and other *really* hard rocks. It took a VERY slow speed and mineral oil cooling. Mine was case hardened, so once I go through 1/4" or so of hard stuff, the rest was relatively easy.
For that one I used LMS plans to make the little clamps.
My curent vise is a nicer model and it's REALLY hard. I hit it with a drill bit and a mill a couple of times and there are no scratches, literally...
