you can easily get direction and speed.
but, I am not sure if this is of any benefit. I do not know of anyone actually doing this in the CNC world.
Also, it might add a layer of complexity that is not needed. for most of us, the easiest way is often the best.
my recommendation is to use something else.
old printer motors with encoders can be had for less then a stepper. and a stepper driver board adds $$$
if you are going to use steppers and drivers, you only need a simple interface to have full cnc.
