Sorry if this is a duplicate post. Sent yesterday, but didn't show.
I got a SIEG mill last week, and thanks to John for pointing out the alignment issue with the headstock. However, in regards to the fore/aft (Y-Z plane) alignment, I was able to correct the column alignment by merely removing the block that bolts to the base and deburring/chamfering the edges.
I was mostly impressed with the machining on this unit, but a little attention to the detail at the edges of the mating surface (which also removed a couple thou of paint that had seeped around the corners) made shims unnecessary.
I would recommend this before shimming - it may save you some work. It did me, anyway.
