[GrizHFMinimill] Re: Mini Mill Alignment...

I just got a mini-mill last week and went through aligning it. I was pleased to read John's write-up, as the alignment of the head to the column shouldn't be assumed. But, before doing that, I found a significant fore and aft tilt was not due to the head and dovetail alignment. I disassembled the column, and pulled the casting that the column bolts to from the base. If the machined surface on the locating boss isn't truly perpendicular to the ways, you could be creating the same alignment offset he describes for the X-Z plane.

All I did was deburr/chamfer the edges of the mounting casting, also taking off some paint where it had run under the casting. When I reassembled things, I found it was dead nuts, so I didn't have to do any shimming in that direction.

I was impressed with the basic machining, but just a little attention to finish was all it took.

Your mileage may vary, but hope that helps.

One thing that was not very clear was in regards to the shimming required to true up the column fore and aft. I am assuming that you meant to put the shims under the front edge of the column mounting plate where the three cap screws hold the column to the table. I was not clear and I could see where shims might be inserted along the edge of the contact point where the "big nut" holds the column to the base. I just wanted to check. You mentioned in your document that you were going to post some pictures of the process.... I am still a little fuzzy about the head casting to the column. I know there are four capscrews that bolt the two together but I and not sure how to proceed. Any advice/tips would be much appreciated.
