On these small mills (as on any machine tool) the stiffness of the
structure is the ultimate criteria for performance. Low stiffness
equates to deflection under loading which results in inaccurate cutting
and (worse) low resonant frequency of the system leading to chatter.
Cast iron is saved from it's low modulus by high internal dampening. The
addition of shims of any type into the load path will reduce stiffness
to some extent. Accurate finishing of joints by hand or machine that
result in tight metal to metal joints are as close to solid metal as you
can get. Small machines tend towards low stiffness in any case and are
only saved by good fits and short load paths! Bill in Boulder
