Just in case you don't want to read the details:

I was looking at the belt drive and one common reason for that upgrade seemed to be leaving the spindle lock in while firing up the mill. I've come close a few times. I put green tape on it so I could at least see it. But, then I started looking at the spindle lock kit from LMS and variations online. I'm getting a little tired of drilling and tapping cast iron. All I wanted to do was put a spring on the locking bar and have it not move.

I was thinking snap ring, but then the spring would fall off. Then I thought securing it with a zip tie might work. I was in Home D and looking at springs. They were like 5.00 for two and I didn't know what size I needed offhand. Then I saw the "handyman spring assortment" -- 5.00 for 84 springs. Sign me up... Then I wondered if I could avoid the snap ring. I hate snap rings -- especially the little ones. So, I put some of my favorite laquer masking tape on the locking pin so the zip tie could bite into something. Then I was careful in measuring the placement of the spring and the placement of the zip tie and its lock to hold the spring as well as possible. Worked great and the spring placement dosen't budge. It even stays in without locking if you don't let it shoot across the room when releasing the lock.
Spring: 0.06
1" Tape: 0.01
Teeny zip tie: 0.01
Total: Eight cents...

I'm sure there are 20 other forum posts with the exact same idea. It was just fun to think about.

Might still want that belt drive setup...
