This is a group on machining and we use dial indicators to check run out of anything that we mount in the chuck of a machine. So most people are knowledgeable on design aspects. That was why I asked a question on runout of steering wheel. What makes you look at this question as off topic? To me it is very much related to machine design. 

I used the word off topic because I was deviating from Saab 93. But to me it was very much On-topic as far as the group was concerned. I hope you will answer.

This topic on cars is tempting me to ask an off-topic question to this highly knowledgeable group. I have observed that  steering wheels on all cars are always mounted with a massive run-out. The wheel appears to wobble when you try to spin it a full circle or more. TIR appears to very high in the range of 1/4 to 1/2 inch. I suspect it is done so for some good reason. Could anyone let me know why?

Exactly. I had lost the key nut for removing the road wheels on my Peugeot. The cynical guy in the spares dept of the local agent said that there  is a number on the top of the nut, give him that and they can reproduce it for me. No nut = no number. To recover the number I can quote the chassis number and then they will provide a replacement. Cost of £25 to look up the database, plus £200 to for the replacement. I bought a new set of four bolts for £45. Made a mould of the existing bolt on a wheel. Then made a 'nut' from a piece of CRS, drilled holes to insert hardened studs to locate into recesses in the wheel bolts. Job done for the cost of some time of which I have lots being semi-retired and some metal. Total bill form the garage would have been lots of money.

Satisfaction in not being a benefactor the the modern day horse sellers.
