In this particular car, there are things I can't really fix, such as
(likely) the door lock sensors and the like. Or shall we say, I chose
not to try to fix them because car diagnostics (which take a tech II
tool *and* security permissions) did not give me a conclusive
diagnosis (door lock sensor <in locking module> or alarm system main
module.

Having neither of these and trusting not at all the people on e-bay...
the garage won.

However, I knew from the first crunch pretty much exactly what had
happened, and had to U-turn back to the house, dodging the impending
rain, and then had to wire the window shut for a while (after I took
the door apart).

The screen roller was the wrong diameter (but was the right diameter
for another car). Making one was a good idea.

I think I impressed the people at the repair shop, most of their
customers don't do that.

I also offered to get them copies of the photos of the parts so they
could see what was involved.

Figure in that there were *no* replacements available, and that I was
tired of spending money on things I could not fix......

Now getting the thing restrung was another matter. The tensioning
springs were really aggressive.

The trick is the little green pulley with the ridges on the top. If
you're feeding the cable from the left, then point the longer part of
the pattern to the lower right. Catch the cable in the groove and
hold it firmly in place as you move the sled. that ought to get the
cable around the top part of the groove. Then keep on moving the
sled, and the long part of the groove ought to push the wire into the
proper groove around the pulley.

But it works now, and that's the good part. I can fix the other one
when it breaks, too, or the other ones (front doors are different).

Interesting how a little bit of machine tooling can do a lot of good.
