Re: [GrizHFMinimill] Beginner questions

Hi Troppo,

Different people want different things - at some point you will decide whether you want to devote your time and money towards CNC or manual machining.  Neither is right or wrong and it is a decision only you can make.  Similarly the use of DROs

But some advice - start manually.  The apprentices we teach start with manual turning and milling and are not allowed to use power feed or DROs until they have proved that they are competent in using the machines by hand and reading the dials.  Hand feeding allows you to feel the feedback from the cutting process - you will learn a lot by feeling and listening to what the machine tells you.

Once they have a proven ability at manual machining they are allowed to use power feed.  No-one is signed on to a CNC course until they have completed a manual machining course.

Regarding DROs - dials keeps your mind agile and encourages you to think carefully before cutting, but once you have used DROs you will wonder how you ever lived without them....

All the best,
Ian

G`day guys
Sick of me yet lol. The friend of a friend that offered me the clamping set told me to check out ebay for DRO`s so i did. I found these in 6 inch, 12 inch, 24 inch up to 36 inch. What do you guys think of these for our little mills? I havent got the cash to buy the full cnc kit (as much or more as the damned mill) and cant se the value of it at this stage, but like the idea of being able to perfectly duplicate a certain piece of work to a known set of figures.
Cheers
Troppo
