Re: [GrizHFMinimill] cost of converting to CNC - details

Hi John, those are just my experiences after some years doing this.
And Hannu, not Ed.

Lathe is originally a chicom 12x light industrial, VMC is scratch built,
in this example.
No quill with ISO30 spindle, the whole bridge moves up and down.
This avoids the quill/head nod.

Table is 1600x500 mm in area.
Linear guides are 35 mm hiwin profiled guides, overconstrained, ie 4
guides on front, 2 on back, total 6 vertical guides, 1000 mm long.

Just making the new spindle mount collar...
200x200x50 mm block.
Bore through for 90 mm hole, circa 90.01 +/- or so, face flat, in lathe.
Put spindle in, mark bolt locations, drill tap for M8 x 6 iirc.

And the spindle needs the lathe, and the lathe needs the chip shield,
and the z axis needs the z axis ballscrew secondary support mount, and
the main ballnut mounting block needs facing.
Chip shield needs a support mount, will put in a temp one for now (just
a flat steel strip, 30x15x620 mm).
Shield is justa 300x300x5 mm flat mild steel plate, behind the lathe.
Approx 10€ at the metal shop.

So, need to do 1,2,3 to be able to get to do spindle mount for new spindle.
Typical.
BUT !!!
The new z ballscrew is a ground screw, of high industrial quality,
secondhand.
Really, really close to getting it moving again..
