Re: [GrizHFMinimill] Mini Mill Belt Upgrade / Spindle Bearings

If your changing bearings anyway it makes sense to remove them as part of the process

I did procure new bearings nearly 12 years ago but the original bearings were (and are still) giving good figures so I never got round to it.

My belt drive was pencilled in as a future mod from the start but it took operator error  resulting in breakage after 4 years of use before I got round to it

As I have it apart and am replacing the bearings anyway, it seemed like now would be the time if I was going to remove them. If I can leave them out, it makes re-fitting the spindle that much easier.

From what I can tell, they really aren’t used for anything other then the gear drive (not needed as spacers for any reason I can see)

There's nothing to stop you taking them out as they aren't doing anything with the belt drive in place but a  lot of people don't bother as it saves the work of pulling and re-fitting the spindle and bearings.

In fact a lot of people don't bother removing the small intermediate shaft, gears and bearings or the shift mechanism but just remove the adjustment lever. Saves the work and the need to  blank off the redundant holes left in the head

Mines run with my (home made) belt drive for8 years now with all of them left in place

I am replacing the spindle bearings on my mill and have the belt upgrade. Quick question:

Any reason I can't leave the spindle gears and such out when I re-install the spindle? The intermediate shaft and gears are already gone thanks to the belt upgrade.

Thoughts?
