The gears in the mini-mill are not synchromesh. It's possible to get
the gears into a situation where you can only get halfway there. The
speed changing should not be done with the mill running at any speed.
What I normally do is turn the mill off (toggle switch), shift towards
high. If it doesn't get there, I simply rotate the chuck slightly and
the gears will go in. You can feel where it meshes properly.
Putting the mill in neutral and turning it on for a second repositions
the motor drive gear. Whether or not that hits the right spot is
another matter.
