When I was looking at add a mill to my shop I got some good
advise from a professional machinist. I was considering a round column
mill/drill. He pointed out that you typically set the depth of cut for
an end mill by clamping the spindle down against a stop then raising the
knee to contact the tool. Zero the knee, raise the spindle and raise the
knee by the depth of cut. Now you can take your cut feeding down until
you hit the stop! Works great on a knee type mill or one with a
prismatic column. With a round column however when you move the head
vertically you lose location! Si I bought a Grizzly 1004 knee mill and
have been happy with it for 35 years!
