Re: [7x12MiniLathe] [GrizHFMinimill] Re: Newbie w/questions

An excellent example of the risks of "free" (as in beer) versus "free" (as in speech) applications.

Freebeer programs can become unfree:

 From Dassault's web page:

"DraftSight 2019 represents a major software upgrade. To address the most asked-for capabilities and functionality from our users, DraftSight 2019 provides new powerful features and robust 3D capabilities, along with more product choices and flexibility. We are also investing in other technologies including an upcoming cloud-based version of DraftSight and more.
As a result - IMPORTANT:
  • DraftSight 2019 for Windows® is offered in paid versions only.
  • Once you download and install DraftSight 2019 (free 30-day trial or purchased version), you will no longer be able to redownload or access any previous free version of DraftSight (2018 or earlier).
  • All free versions of DraftSight (2018 or earlier) will cease to run after 12/31/2019."
If I wasn't invested in it, I wouldn't spend time learning it now, unless you're going to pay for it.

LibreCAD is a nice free 2D CAD app, It's a fork of QCad ,  FreeCAD is an open source 2D and 3D application.

Someday I too will need to get more deeply into using one of these apps, right now my design system is also PencilAndPaperCAD :-)

The program functions much the same way as ACAD which I started using in about 1982."

Thank you for mentioning that drafting program.  Up to now, I've always done drawings with pencil and paper, but it's high time I entered the 21st century (or at least the 20th!). I was looking for a basic CAD program, preferably free, and this may be it.  But you sound very experienced at CAD.  Is this a good one for a beginner?

At the moment, I just want something that can replace manual drafting, but having something that could do 3D, etc,  might also be good.  I have manual machinery and no plans to change that.
