Perhaps you have a Real Bull mill rather than a Sieg like most of us?  I believe the Real Bull comes standard with a Y axis thrust bearing.
I did a similar mod as others have discussed, but used a bronze bushing instead.  A also added a roller bearing thrust bearing from Enco between the handwheel and the shaft retainer.  I posted pictures in my blog:  http://robertchristine.blogspot.com/2011/03/mini-mill-upgrade-adding-larger-table.html

guess my mills a little differant then the rest cause theres a thrust bearing behind the crank handle same as the ones on both ends of the X axis screw that I replaced with better grade of bearings when I replace the screws with precision acme screws and nuts from Roton
