Hi Lee,
there are a number of different collet designs about and you should follow the instructions that come with the chuck some designs have a stop to prevent the collet rotating whist tightening and in use for example.
What the designs generally have in common are that the collet angles are steeper which makes them non-locking, unlike those in MT collets for example, or they will have a ring in the collet nut that "pops" the taper when slackened thereby releasing the shank or stock being held.
Some chucks for end mills may be threaded to accept threaded end mills which will need to be screwed in and out after the clamping pressure is released

Subject: [GrizHFMinimill] Sorry in advance for the basic nature of my question/Quick change collet chuck
Hello
In hoping to speed tool changes in my mini mill, I have purchased a collet chuck set MT#3 ER-32.
I hate to ask but my question is this: How do you properly load a collet as well as your cutting bit into the chuck? Is it simply held in place by the nut? (I understand that the spanner tightens the nut) If so how do you remove the collet after removing the nut?
I know it is a basic question but how is this done the right way?
Once again thank you all for you advice and support.
