The MT3 ER-40 collet I have works as follows: The MT3 part is held in the Lathe with a bolt the runs through the spindle, I use a flat fender washer to ensure that the bolt head doesn't damage the spindle. I just tighten the bolt snug and I have never had the collet chuck slip. In fact, I can remove the bolt and the collet chuck will stay in place. To remove the collet chuck, I thread the bolt into the chuck about 3 to 5 turns and hit the bolt head with a hard rubber hammer and it comes right out.
Now to the next part of the question on how to load the collets: Install the collet in to the ER chuck nut with a slight turn. Then put the collet and nut onto the collet chuck. On my ER collet chuck there is a flattened area that I use a large wrench on to hold the collet chuck, then I use the large wrench and the spanner wrench to tighten the collet chuck nut onto the collet chuck. To remove the collet just reverse the steps.
Hope this helps,
Bob

Subject: [GrizHFMinimill] Sorry in advance for the basic nature of my question/Quick change collet chuck
Hello
In hoping to speed tool changes in my mini mill, I have purchased a collet chuck set MT#3 ER-32.
I hate to ask but my question is this: How do you properly load a collet as well as your cutting bit into the chuck? Is it simply held in place by the nut? (I understand that the spanner tightens the nut) If so how do you remove the collet after removing the nut?
I know it is a basic question but how is this done the right way?
Once again thank you all for you advice and support.
