I have three of them on my mini mill that I bought from Grizzly. They seem to work fairly well and if adapted would work well on the mini lathe too.
I have read that shortening them is no problem and after seeing the scales, it looks like they are all cut from the same stock anyway as the ends are not a finished looking product.

It appears to be from the same company as this 12" unit from Grizzly for
$35.00
http://www.grizzly.com/products/12-Digital-Scale-with-Remote-Readout-Inch-Me
tric-Fraction/T23012
Or these units from Micro-Mark
6" @ $32.95
http://www.micromark.com/Remote-Digital-Readout-6-Inch-Capacity,9897.html
12" @ $39.95
http://www.micromark.com/Remote-Digital-Readout-12-Inch-Capacity,9900.html
24" @ $49.95
http://www.micromark.com/Remote-Digital-Readout-24-Inch-Capacity,9899.html
I've been playing with the idea of putting one of these on the tailstock of
my lathe. Has anyone ever tried to shorten a scale on one of these things?

It's a complete kit and seems like a good price for a 6" scale and single
remote readout. Will change from imperial to metric and can be zeroed for
relative movement of whichever axis it is fitted to.
If you fit only one readout to your mill the z axis would be the best due to
the dreaded head drop andrelatively poor z axis adjust, ment control.
An 8" scale would be better but a 6" at this price wouls be useful
