> Has anyone ever tried to shorten a scale on one of these things?
I've done it. The "bar" is hardened stainless steel, with a PC board inset and plastic label over the PC board. No active components. Can be cut anywhere that's convenient. This is true of all the "el cheapo" DRO scales, digital calipers, Shooting Star, etc, including p/n 2013 thru 2015 and 3091 from LMS. Not true of high precision/high dollar "glass scale" units.
I used a cutoff wheel on my Dremel tool to cut through the bar, as I didn't trust a milling cutter to do a clean enough job. Be sure to encapsulate/protect the "head" if you leave it on while cutting, and use care to clean up any grit.
