RE: [GrizHFMinimill] Re: digital read out from Rockler ?

My actual point was your claim that 0.03mm of 'slop' will round off a nut.

For the non-metric types, 0.03mm is tad over a thou in imperial (1 thou – 0.0254mm)

I'm still dizzy from the rolling my eyes did.

It´s the difference between good and so-so.

Sometimes, both holes, nuts and bolts are made to good levels.
Things like 3a/3b tolerances.
And holes to much better than a thou, or 0.02 mm.
Stuff like reaming for a basic fit, and roller burnishing for the really good stuff.

Things like astronomy, anything watertight, mining stuff, most optical stuff, most grinding stuff, anything gastight, almost 100% in machine tools, everything medical, everything aerospace, a lot of motorbike/car stuff, some robotics, some UAV stuff (hobby), and so on.

And, as-you rightly pointed out, sometimes (often) basic stuff is off-size.
I would not make a cheap bolt - I coudnt.
I pay more for the peace of steel than the bolt costs. I guess you would, as well.

A good 16 mm x 1.50 mm x 140 mm, F125, grade 12.9 bolts costs about 1.60€, or 2$.
Each (from Reyzabal). ISO9000.
Similar price in the US (from McMaster, Misumi, Enco etc).

From my point of view, if you are going to spend the money anyway, on the material, and going to spend a lot of time at it, might as well try and make it as good as you can.
I aim for industrial quality results, for similar results to leading industrial manufacturers.

The whole point is that you, as in everyone, can as well, if you choose to, using very modest equipment.
You don´t need a 20.000 lathe or mill to make stuff to excellent specs.

Oh for crying out loud.

You do know that nuts are usually made undersized, the first nut I picked up
(nominally 13mm) measures 12.78mm. Oddly the cheap junk spanner is spot on
13mm.

I guess I better not use the two together, that .22 difference is SEVEN
TIMES what you think is acceptable, so I'll be rounding that sucker off for
sure.

Hey, if you want to spend a lot of time & money making stuff perfect, then
go right ahead; but don't lecture the rest of us that we need to do it as
well.

Tony
