I can testify to Barry's second point regarding the utility of CNC. We have a small tabletop CNC mill at work (a Sherline). We don't use it for making duplicate parts, but for making smooth cuts along paths that would be impossible to do manually, in particular circular cuts.
While this can be done with a rotary table, I realized we could just use the circle interpolation routine available in G code. We also avoided the need to purchase an RT, since we didn't (and don't) have one.
I'm slowly learning G code for little tasks like this, reminds me a lot of the old microprocessor Assembly code.
