Re: [GrizHFMinimill] Beginner questions

John,

My workshop is either imperial or dual,(which is a bit of a compromise,) but all my imperial machinery - lathe and mill - is 10 tpi which is great. I never came across anything at 1/16. A friend has a cutter grinder with a 20 tpi feed screw, which gives him 50 thou per rev.

Ian and Barry give some good advise.

DRO's are very useful, but initially the working with dials on the machines is paramount.
Get the feel of the machine, gain human skills first.Being on a limited budget as you mention
means IMHO you could buy more useful standard tooling initially than DRO's.

I always use my machine dials in conjunction with the DRO's when setting "home" positions, just a secondary idiot check.
Also,if you are working with DRO's and the batteries run out ,yes you can replace them if you have them in stock,
but you will need to reset the DRO "home positions",easier if you have them set on the dials as well.

I can sympathize w ith guys who have Imperial machines where one turn is 1/16",it must be a bind.
Fractions are IMHO wood working measurements, machine shops tend to use decimals.
So the use of DRO's in this case are helpful but not a necessity for first time users of machine tools.

Good questions you are asking.

Thanks for all the great advice guys, i think the DRO`s will go on hold for a while, at least until i am at least partially competant with the mill operating by hand. Thanks for all the advice you dont know how helpfull its been. I`m a sheet metal fabricator/motor body builder by trade so i`m up on the workshop safety stuff and have a basic knowledge of sharpening on the grinder (drill bits etc) I`ve just got to learn the angles.
Cheers
