[GrizHFMinimill] Adventures in 3D printing

DESIGN PROCESS
1) You need to first generate a model. The eventual output of
your program should be an STL (stereo lithography) file, so it would
be filename.STL when you export it. There are two basic approaches,
one is to use a CAD program and model what you want. The other is to
use a program like OpenSCAD, which is a different kind of modeler.
2) In a conventional CAD program, you draw shapes, place holes,
and combine things. It's all done graphically. Your precision is
just as good as you can push things around graphically. Many programs
out there are either free, or very expensive. Your choice. Read
reviews of the programs and try the evaluation versions if this is how
you want to go.
3) In OpenSCAD, you actually program the shape. You will add and
subtract geometric shapes by writing a description of them. Cube
(x,y,z size), then translate that (move it: x,y,z), or rotate it
(x,y,z). You can add things, subtract them, and so on. The program
has limitations, but you can scale things to several decimal points.
The problem with this program is that you need to be able to program.
If you can do that, then you can use this program. If not, then there
are a number of pre-done objects in thingiverse. One advantage of
this program is that you can parametrically make objects. One design
is a printed circuit board support. The right program can simply
create a bracket with any spacing you need by simply changing one
value.
