Re: [GrizHFMinimill] Removing collet chuck

The fitting depends very much on where the machines are marketed.

Here in the Uk both Sieg and Real Bull lathes are of similar availability and popularity (as opposed to the Sieg dominance in the US).

MT is by far the most popular taper and there is no shortage of tooling, new or used at competitive prices

Almost all Sieg X2-based mini mills are R8 taper.  You can find a comparison on the LittleMachineShop (LMS) page here:

littlemachineshop.com
Mini Mill Comparison. This chart compares the specifications of the major brands of the mini mill. Bold rows highlight what we feel are significant ...

You can also find a nice selection of collets there, but I ended up sticking with a 3/8” and a 1/8” collet and getting end mills to fit (this even works for most edge finders and other tooling).  Everything else for me goes into the drill chuck (e.g. center drills, drills, etc.)

This may be a silly question, but the bolt that you loosened is indeed the draw bar, correct?  It is likely under a round, plastic dust cap.  The first time I removed my chuck from the factory, it took a pretty good blow - just make sure you’re hitting straight down on it.

Good luck.

Hi all

I am a new member and recently purchased a minimill.  I decided due to the lack of collets (I believe they are E32), but I am unsure exactly and want to see what else is on the market.  However, I cannot remove the chuck from the mill  and I am unsure whether it is morse taper or R8, I just cannot get it off, no matter how many taps (whacks) on the top bolt that i have loosened to remove the collet holder.

Any suggestions and recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards
