I bought my lathe used but it was originally a Harbor Freight item. Although I am happy with it, and it has worked well for me for many projects, if I had it to do over again I would look seriously at what Little Machine Shop has to offer.
I'm not familiar with what is around Alabama (I'm in Michigan), but I'm sure there are other group members who might offer some advice.
One long-shot suggestion: If you are up for a road trip, the NAMES Expo is coming up in April in Wyandotte, MI. LMS is usually there and they used to do a deal where you could buy a machine and pick it up at the Expo. I have no connection to LMS so you'd have to ask them if they will do this, but you would get to see a good show (other vendors there as well) and eliminate shipping costs.
