You read it correctly. However, for a beginner, the way I explained it seems to get the results we are looking for. Trying to identify scroll plates, etc., by email and for a new user is complicated.
Because there are two ways to do things does not make any one of them wrong, just different.

I am obviously not reading this correctly!
Jaws CAN be placed in a 3 jaw chuck one at a time. Rotate the scroll
back until the start of the scroll is about to enter the required jaw
slot. Insert jaw, rotate scroll until engaged. Look at next jaw slot and
rotate scroll until start is about to enter. Insert Jaw 2 rotate scroll
until engaged. Repeat for 3.
